NU Administration Correspondance
DivestNU wants to be as open and transparent as possible when it comes to our progress and setbacks. All of our written correspondence with the administration will therefore be posted here, where it is available to the community.
Email to Senior Leadership, post Fossil Free Centennial
October 18, 2016. After Fossil Free Centennial, DivestNU representatives meet with members of the senior leadership team to address next steps. The administration was unwilling to compromise or look into the issue further in any way. This email addressed to VP of Student Affairs Madeleine Estabrook lays out our reasoning for rejecting the administration’s proposals and a pledge to continue escalating our campaign.
Student Government Senate Resolution SR-FA-16-101
October 3, 2016. On the first Monday of DivestNU’s encampment on Centennial Common, the Student Government passed a resolution reaffirming the student body’s 2014 vote in favor of fossil fuel divestment. The resolution was sponsored by representatives of six coalition members (NBSA, PSA, FSO, SJP, UTSAV, HEAT). The legislation was send to the university’s senior leadership team.
Recommendation of the Fossil Fuel Divestment Working Group of the Social Impact Council
In the Spring of 2016, after months of research and consideration, the Fossil Fuel Divestment Working Group presented this recommendation to Northeastern’s Social Impact Council, which voted to endorse the report and send it to Northeastern’s Senior Leadership Team for further consideration. The report recommends full divestment as part of a renewed comprehensive climate action plan.
Office of Student Affairs Acknowledges Divestment Vote
On April 14th, 2015, the Office of Student Affairs sent an email to the university community acknowledging the results of the previous year’s divestment referendum and the ongoing efforts to explore the issue through the Social Impact Council. The email was a collaboration between DivestNU and VP of Student Affairs Madeline Estabrook, and a product of much student pressure.

On October 20th, 2014, the Student Government Association voted unanimously in a Full-Body session to accept and endorse the Final Report and Recommendation of the Fossil Fuel Divestment Ad-Hoc Committee to establish the Committee for Social Impact and Responsibility at Northeastern. The Ad-Hoc Committee was formed by SGA in response to the 2014 referendum.

In April 2014 the DivestNU Coalition delivered another letter to the administration specifically requesting a meeting with President Aoun in light of the overwhelming majority of students who favor fossil divestment. Discussions stalled over the summer but resumed in the fall.
